About Us

The SIPA InteRegional Studies Initiative (IRSI) builds on the many strengths of the FIU School of International and Public Affairs area studies programs covering the major world regions, including Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean, and Middle East in addition to a highly innovative project on the role of Waterways, coupled with research thematic foci on a variety of global and comparative topics, such as Security, Governance, Environmental Sustainability and Social Identity.

FIU has long held a Title VI National Resource Center in Latin America (now as part of a consortium with the University of Miami), and from the broader standpoint of international studies has created special interest and faculty experience in fostering cross-regional and trans-national topics, ranging from European tourism in the Americas to China’s recent investment in Africa and Brazil, and from Arab or Chinese diaspora communities worldwide to points of intersection and/or conflict in political economy and cultural exchanges worldwide.

IRSI is at once a center for housing and coordinating many of SIPA’s considerable research and outreach activities to the arts, business, diplomatic, education, and journalism communities, and a cutting-edge scholarly institute exploring areas of innovative research in relation to global challenges and conflicts.
